Research Units

Research at the Department of Biology is networked with several international organizations and institutions. Research Units are currently active in:

1. Isolation of endophytic actinomycetes, supported by the International Center for Biotechnology (ICBiotech), Osaka University
  1. The Royal University of Phnom Penh, under the framework of an Asian Center of Research and Education (Asian CORE) program of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), is contributing to a project with the title “Next Generation Bioproduction Platform Leveraging Subtropical Microbial Bioresources”.
  2. The project aims to:
    1. develop next-generation bioproduction platform by promoting interaction between researchers from Japan, Thailand, Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia.
    2. foster the development of young researchers from those countries for future research and development in the field of industrial biotechnology.

2. Survey of primates in Cambodia, in cooperation with Kyoto University
  1. Distribution of primates in 10 provinces of Cambodia (Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Kampong Speu, Koh Kong, Kratie, Kampong Som, Ratanakiri, Siem Reap and Stung Treng).
  2. Distribution of Long tailed macaque in Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Batembang, Banteay Meanchey, Odor Meanchey, Prah Vihea and Siem Reap Provinces.

3. Baseline survey of freshwater zooplankton in the Northeast Cambodia, supported by Fauna and Flora International (FFI)
  1. This work is supported by the Center for Biodiversity Conservation (CBC) under Fauna and Flora International (FFI).
  2. The project aims to sample and analyze freshwater habitats of the Mekong River basin in three provinces (Kratie, Ratanakiri and Stung Treng Provinces) where hydropower development has been proposed.

4. Creation and operation of the Cambodia National Herbarium (RUPP) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, in cooperation of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris
  1. Very little of the flora of Cambodia is currently known and studied compared to neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. The Cambodia National Herbarium at RUPP in cooperation with the Herbarium of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris (MNHN-Paris) have collected over 2,500 specimens from Indochina. The focus has been on flowering plants, including new crops in several provinces of Cambodia.
  2. The project aims to:
    1. rehabilitate human resources for researching flora of Cambodia.
    2. build institutional capacity at the Cambodian National Herbarium (RUPP).

5. Preservation of duplicate specimens from the Herbarium Indochinese in Paris
  1. In this program, a Cambodian colleague, a Laotian colleague and a Vietnamese colleague spent 2 months in Paris in 2008 and 2009, to select, sort and computerize duplicate Indochinese specimens deposited in Paris, and transfer them to herbaria in the three aforementioned countries.

6. Botanical study of the family Zingiberaceae in Indochina (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam)
  1. The majority of the family Zingiberaceae (over 1,200 species in 53 genera) originating in tropical area (Asia) contribute to the biodiversity vital to forest ecosystems and yield valuable non-timber forest resource for human consumption.
  2. The aims of the project are:
    1. revise and update the Zingiberaceae flora of the Indochina region and contribute to the review of “Flore du Cambodge, du Laos et du Vietnam” edited by the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris.
    2. study biological, ecological and ethobotanical characteristics of Zingberaceae species of the Indochina region
    3. establish a botanical database and a living collection of Zingiberaceae species for the Indochina region.

7. Floristic inventory of the Cardamom Mountains (Province of Koh Kong, Cambodia)
  1. The Cardamom Mountains is covered by dense forest that is ecologically significant and rich in biodiversity. The region is very rich in endemic species, especially the Zingiberaceae family, and in species with medicinal properties.
  2. Aims of the project include:
    1. contributing to the Checklist of the Flora of Cambodia.
    2. training technicians and students with the Master in Plant Biology
