ENG101-ENG410 English III- VI
English Language Support Unit
Year II-III, Semesters I & II
As most textbooks and research books in Cambodia are written in English or French, foreign language acquisition is essential for professors and students alike. The development of students’ knowledge base and research skills across all disciplines at the Royal University of Phnom Penh is an outstanding goal of this foreign language program.
HGE201 General Chemistry
Mr. Chuon Vanna (Chemistry)
Year II, Semester I
In this course, students gain an understanding of the methods used for studying chemical phenomena on the earth, in water, and in the atmosphere. It emphasizes the fundamental concepts and rules of chemistry. Topics covered include matter, atoms and atomic bonding, reactions of ions in solution, measurements and moles, gases, liquids and solids, solutions and solubility, chemistry electrons in transition electrochemistry, kinetics, dynamic chemical equilibrium and acids-bases equilibrium.
Ecosystems and Large Areas
HGE202 Dynamic Climatology I
HGE208 Dynamic Climatology II
Mr. Bun Serey
Year II, Semester I & II
This course examines the role of weather and climate in our lives through a study of atmosphere, seasonal and daily temperature, solar and wind energy, cyclones and storms, atmosphere-ocean interaction, weather forecasting, Doppler radar, water spouts, humidity and condensation. It provides students with an understanding of global climactic patterns, and the way humans have classed them over time. They also study climate modification and global warming, and examine its possible causes including carbon dioxide and the Greenhouse effect.
HGE203 Dynamic Geomorphology I
HGE209 Dynamic Geomorphology II
Mr. Var Channarith, Mr. Alastaire Curry
Year II, Semester I & II
This course provides an introduction to landscape-forming processes and landforms, with particular emphasis on Southeast Asia. Students consider the study of geomorphology, including geological time, stratigraphy, dating and the tropical environment of Southeast Asia, including its geology, landforms, rivers, and climate. They then study the Roche cycle,
Roche weathering, slope processes and forms, fluvial processes and forms and coastal processes and forms.
HGE204 Hydrology I
HGE210 Hydrology II
Mr. Nuon Horn
Year II, Semester I & II
In this course, students learn about the basic physical phenomena of continental hydrology, that is, the balance of water in natural currents, ground water, tributaries, lakes, ponds, and swamps, and the various meteorological effects on this balance. Students then examine marine hydrology or oceanography, including characteristics such as ocean water’s composition, pressure, waves, currents, tides, tsunamis and storms surges and their effects. Student then learn about ocean exploration and its technological future. Finally, students examine current threats to ocean resources including mineral, water and ocean life.
HGE211 Biogeography
Mr. Bun Serey
Year II, Semester II
In this course, students analyze plant and animal ecosystems in terms of climate, soil type and water. As part of this, students gain knowledge about organisms and the bio-concentration of animals, as well as the distribution of soils and organisms in various regions, including glacial, steppe, desert, tropical, sub-tropical, equatorial and mountainous areas. They then focus on the diversity of life at altitude in the oceans.
Areas and Society
HGE205 Physical Geography of Cambodia
Mr. Nguon Srieng
Year II, Semester I
In this course, students focus on the geography of Cambodia, including its climate, its plains, hills, plateaus, river networks including the Mekong, Tonle Sap, Bassac, rivers and canals in the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia’s coast, sea and natural resources including soils and plants. The focus then shifts to human geography, including population distribution, and economic geography, including Cambodia’s political borders and the climactic influences on agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, industry and transport. Students then analyze Cambodian industry, in particular internal and international trade and the growth of the tourism industry, in light of their knowledge.
HGE206 Transportation
Mr. Nuon Horn
Year II, Semester I
In this course, students learn about the history of modern transportation, and the relationship between transportation and economic exchange. Students then explore means of national and international transportation, including road, railways, river, sea and air. They then compare transportation systems in developed and developing countries.
HGE207 Cartography I
HGE214 Cartography II
Mr. Nuon Horn
Year II, Semester I & II
This course gives students a general introduction to mapping and the issues surrounding cartography. Firstly, students learn the history of cartography, up until the introduction of aerial photography. They then learn to interpret maps, and use them to solve practical problems. Finally, students learn about complex map characteristic and how to draw maps, using color, symbols and numerals.
HGE212 Economic Geography of Cambodia
Mr. Nguon Srieng
Year II, Semester II
Following on from a study of Cambodia’s physical geography, students focus on the economic geography of their home country. They study key economic concepts, terms and phrases to describe economic and natural resources and their relationships. They then study the development of Cambodia’s social and economic conditions, including agriculture, fishing and industries such as transportation and tourism.
HGE213 Industrial Geography
Mr. Chea Tong
Year II, Semester II
In this course, students examine industries throughout the world, paying particular attention to the differences between developed and developing countries and between heavy and light industries. Students also learn about natural resources and energy consumption in industry, the organization of production space and the distribution of products around the world.
