HSO201 Social Psychology
Mr. Chap Nimol
Year II, Semester I
In this course, students learn skills and theories in social psychology, gaining a wider basis for understanding social issues. Topics covered include language, perception and memory, emotive behaviour, body image, stereotypes, the nature of the self, social interaction, group processes, self control and social control.
HSO202 Introduction to Economic Science
Mr. Phon Seng
Year II, Semester I
Students learn about sociological aspects of economics, studying the nature and history of work, the economy as an instituted process, technology and job design, work motivations, entrepreneurship, relationships in working groups, cross-cultural organizations and the social problems that can arise from work.
HSO203 Cultural Anthropology
Dr. Dork Vuthy
Year II, Semester I
This course introduces students to the principles of cultural anthropology. Students explore a variety of approaches in cultural anthropology and sociology, including comparative and holistic approaches. They learn definitions of culture, examine how culture is shared, learned, transmitted and symbolised, and study instances of adaptive and maladaptive cultures. They also investigate gender issues, methods of
social organisation in tribes and developed societies, kinship within marriage, the nuclear family, and language. All topics have a distinct Cambodian focus, and students consult research material including NGO reports to enrich their experience of this subject.
HSO204 Sociology of Culture
Dr. Vong Em Sam An
Year II, Semester I
In this course, students examine the meanings and structures of culture, and its role in social and economic development. They learn sociological frameworks for thinking about cultures, deconstruct folk culture and conceptualise the past as a mirror of the present. In addition, students study rituals and community solidarity, and examine pre-industrial sources of contemporary culture, industrialism and mass culture, power and culture, and cultural change. A key reference text is Hall and Neitz's Culture (Sociological Perspectives), 1993 Edition.
HSO205 Comparative History of Southeast Asia

Year II, Semester I
This subject examines the history of South-East Asia, focussing on the period from the eighteenth-century to the present. Students learn about the histories of Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines and the new state of East Timor. They examine the geographic and demographic movements that have shaped the histories of these nations; about colonial rule, emerging nationalism; and political independence; and investigate broad themes of social, economic, and cultural history. Students then compare and contrast the histories of these Southeast Asian societies, with regards to social, economic and political history.
HSO206 Public Administration
Ms. Puch Sina
Year II, Semester I
In this course, students study the meanings and methods of public administration, and its role in modern society. With an eye to the differences between public and private sector administration, students analyze concepts of power and organizational hierarchy, organizational socialization, leadership and management, and discuss the implications of strategic planning, government administration and implementation. By the conclusion of this course, students have a deep understanding of the Cambodian public administration sector, and the relevant policy and legislation directing it.
HSO207 Introduction to Logic
Year II Semester I
Mr. Veng Chang
This course provides students with the necessary philosophical background they need for further sociological studies. Students examine the standards of formal logic, including rules, assumptions, comments and demonstrations, and build on their individual skills in logical thought.
HSO208 Gender in Cambodia
Mr. Long Chan Davy
Year II, Semester I
In this course, students examine the issues faced by Cambodian women in all aspects of life, including education, politics, labor and employment, family and marriage, domestic violence, spousal support, human trafficking and prostitution. They analyze the legal rights and responsibilities of women under both international covenants and Cambodian laws, analyze the impact of law on the reality of women’s lives, and develop ways to mitigate the challenges faced by women in Cambodia.
HSO209 History of Economic Thought
Mr. Phon Seng
Year II, Semester II
In this course, students explore the development of economic thought from ancient to modern times. Taking the economic theories of Classical Greek philosophers including Plato and Aristotle as their starting point, students study the development of modern economic theory through the works of St. Augustine, Francois Quesnay, Sir Dudley North, Adam Smith, Robert Owen, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes.
HSO210 World Civilization

Year II, Semester II
In this survey course, students explore the civilizations of modern Russia, India, China and Western Europe, and compare them with Khmer civilization and history.
