HSO301 Methodology of Social Research I
Mr. Kimsovann Kiry
Year III, Semester I
In this valuable course, students learn how to conduct individual research in the social sciences. Topics covered include an overview of research theories; the differences between research in the physical and social sciences; the dimensions and limits of research; qualitative and quantitative research; research design; measurement, sampling and analysis; and methods of communicating research findings.

HSO302 Community Development
Mr. Loeuk Savann
Year III, Semester I
In this course, students learn about the work done by community workers seeking to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged people in both urban and rural areas. They examine the roles and responsibilities of community authorities, community organizations, participatory rural appraisals, and community representatives in gaining skills and building capacity among communities.

HSO303 Sociology of Education
Miss Te Sothy
Year III, Semester I
In this course, students learn about the roles, functions and aims of education in various societies. They examine the issues from both Western and Eastern perspectives, and examine education as a factor for social change. Students also learn about the process of socialization which occurs through schooling and conduct a specialized study of primary, secondary and tertiary education in Cambodia since 1975.

HSO304 Sociology of Communication and Media

Year III, Semester I
In this course, students examine theories and models of mass communication, concentrating on the mass media. They analyze the roles and goals of communication, and its role in establishing and perpetuating group leadership.

HSO305 Sociology of Law
Mr. Loeuk Savann
Year III, Semester I
This course arms students with a sociological analysis of the legal order. Through lectures and discussions, students study the premise that law is both the product of social interaction and the impetus for social change. Students survey major sociological theories and research techniques into the origins, processes, functions, and actors of the law. Students are also encouraged to consider the role of law in reinforcing and/or changing class, gender, and racial inequalities.

HSO306 Sociology of Religion
Miss Te Sothy
Year III, Semester I
In this course, students gain an understanding of the impact of religion on social institutions, social structure and social identity. Topics discussed include religion’s meanings and forms; the origins and social roles of religions; the relationship between religion and science; and changes in religion and religious practice in the contemporary era, including secularization.

HSO307 Sociology of Health
Mr. Mel Sophanna
Year III, Semester I
This course introduces students to core concepts and theoretical approaches in the sociology of health and medicine. Firstly, the concepts of health, illness and disease are introduced and deconstructed, and the role of the social sciences within the health care sector is discussed. Students then explore the ways that ill health can be understood, and the different ways it has been explained and managed, considering traditional, Western and alternative medicine, and the varying doctor-patient interactions they offer. Students discuss the role of traditional healers and medicine in parts of the underdeveloped world, and the role of alternative medicine in developed countries. In addition, students explore metaphors and representations of disease, which can lead to stigma and distort the ways in which sufferers of disease are treated. The final session in this course discusses the importance of sociological and anthropological research in providing informed reviews of health issues and policies, and how this research can be used in developing public health programs.

HSO308 Methodology of Social Research II

In the second part of this practical course, students hone their skills in conducting individual research in the social sciences. Students explore various research theories; the differences between research in the physical and social sciences; the dimensions and limits of research; qualitative and quantitative research; research project design; measurement, sampling and analysis; and methods of communicating research findings.

HSO309 Sociology of Development
Mr. Souk Narin
Year III, Semester II
In this course, students learn the theory, strategy and practice behind economic, political and rural development. Topics covered include modernization; measures of inequality and development; urbanization; political development; aid and development; dependency and world system theory; agrarian structures and agricultural stagnation; and the particular objectives and achievements of development in Cambodia.

HSO310 Social Work
Mr. Thy Naroeun
Year III, Semester II
Students learn about the profession of social work, in which trained professionals assist individuals and groups in overcoming trauma and planning ahead. As part of this, they examine various theories related to social work practice for individuals, communities and families.

HSO311 Ethnography
Mr. Dork Vuthy
Year III, Semester II
In this applied study of ethnography, students gain an appreciation of the various ethnic groups that inhabit Cambodia, specifically the Islamic Cambodians (Cham), Vietnamese, Laotian, and Chinese minorities, as well as the hill tribes and Montagnards of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri.

HSO312 Social Change
Mr. Chap Nimol
Year III, Semester II
Social change is one of the most important, challenging and exciting topics in sociology. This course introduces students to some of the basic concepts, dimensions, theories, sources and patterns of social change, allowing them to further examine instances of social change within their social, cultural and theoretical contexts.

HSO313 Project Development
Mr. Loeuk Savann
Year III, Semester II
This practical course examines the complex process of preparing and writing grant proposals. Students learn about the structure of a grant proposal, and are guided through the process of researching potential funding, and writing an introduction, a statement of need, sections on goals, objectives, methods, personnel, evaluation and an accurate budget. They are then given the opportunity to learn by actively participating in the writing of a grant proposal.

HSO314 Practicum/ Field Work II
Head of Department
Year III, Semester II

As part of their degree, students spend four to five days in a village examining the changing industry and economy of the Cambodian rural environment. Students choose their own research topics, combining theoretical knowledge with practical field experience.
