This program develops students’ professional skills in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) at the secondary school level. It consists of the following components:
IEN401 Teaching Methodology I
IEN406 Teaching Methodology II

Year IV, Semesters I & II
In this course, students learn those teaching principles and techniques that they can apply in their own classes. Modules include teaching techniques, classroom management, lesson planning and delivery, syllabus design and material design and development. Students also make observation visits to schools, in order to build their practical experience with teaching methodologies.
IEN402 Applied Linguistics I
IEN407 Applied Linguistics II

Year IV, Semesters I & II
This unit provides theoretical grounding to the Teaching Methodology courses. Students examine various styles of learners and teachers, phonetics and phonology, discourse analysis and the relationship between language and society. Students need to prepare well before each week’s classes by reading and thinking critically about the themes assigned by lecturers, so as to contribute to the class effectively.

In this course, students learn the theories and philosophies behind education, focusing especially on theories of social and cognitive development. Students investigate the influence of nature and nurture on human growth and development, and explore other aspects of educational psychology. Students also study school management, discovering management factors that can affect the success or failure of schools.
IEN409 Khmer Studies
Coordinator: Mr. Ponn Chhay
Year IV, Semester II
This unit has been designed to help students gain a sound knowledge of Khmer civilization and culture.
IEN410 Practicum (Teaching Practice)
Individual Supervisors
Year IV, Semester II
Students are expected to apply the teaching techniques and theories they have learnt in class to real classroom situations during a six week practicum during their final semester. Each trainee works closely with teaching staff at a school in Phnom Penh and with a supervisor from IFL during the course of their practicum.
