IFR466 Internship in tour operator

Year IV, Semesters I & II
Over the period of one month, students undertake an internship in a real-lie tour operator business, or another tourism-related organization. In doing so, students gain valuable practical experience in customer service, translation and production of travel documents, issuing tickets, and gain some experience within the field of tourism advertising.

iii) Translation
This elective course provides students with the methodologies and techniques of professional translation. Working in groups, students come to understand new words and concepts, and learn the computer skills they will need to work as a translator. In addition, students can practice translating both from Khmer to French and French to Khmer, and work with a French teacher to translate a storybook. At the end of the course, the translated books printed and displayed at the Institute of Foreign Languages.

IFR370 Informatics for translation and writing

Year III, Semesters I & II
In this course, students learn to use specialized information technology tools, which have been developed to assist the translator. As part of this, they learn to use the computer laboratories at RUPP and at the French Cultural Center, Phnom Penh.

IFR371 Methodology of technical translation I

Year III, Semesters I & II
In this course, students examine technical French, as used in diverse fields including medicine, law, administration and economics. Students also acquire the methodological grounding to enable them to complete specialized translation projects.

IFR372 Atelier of documentary-terminology I

Year III, Semesters I & II
Students learn to collect resources and documentation for translation projects; build a terminological inventory and phraseology; learn to produce a completed lexicological product; and study the process of professional translation, including gathering specifications, definitions of objectives, elaboration of a prototype, performance test, implantation and dissemination of a final product.

IFR373 Literary translation I

Year III, Semesters I & II
By reading various literary works, students address the specific problems that come with translating literature. They build practical skills in interpreting, and complete a major project, interpreting a work of literature over the period of their studies.

IFR374 Version – Theme I

Year III, Semesters I & II
Students complete translation exercises, building their ability to translate from French to Khmer and Khmer to French. They compare and consolidate the syntax and grammatical knowledge of each language, enriching their understanding of the lexical basis for both languages. Materials: Texts from Khmer and French authors.

IFR470 Initiation to interpretation

Year IV, Semesters I & II
Students learn the techniques of sight interpretation, acting as a physical guide and interpreter. They also learn to undertake both consecutive and simultaneous translation, examining the process of taking notes, preparing necessary documentation, and the ethics of interpretation.

IFR471 Methodology of technical translation II Mr. SOK Lim Srorn
Year IV, Semesters I & II
Students build their abilities in translating technical documents, in a professional environment. Students learn to translate and edit financial and information technology reports, and revise the editorial demands of translation work, including page organization, setup and design.

IFR472 Atelier of documentary-terminology II Mr. SOK Lim Srorn
Year IV, Semesters I & II
Students build on their skills in translating, within a professional environment, by undertaking various translation projects. They follow the correct process of translation, collecting necessary evidence and documents and producing a final work which satisfies client demands.

IFR473 Initiation to literary translation II

Year IV, Semesters I & II
Students build on their skills in literary translation, focusing on the practical aspects of working as a professional translator. As part of this, they build their understanding of the process of professional translation, including page design and setup, working with computers and meeting deadlines and other client demands. Finally, students become familiar with the financial aspects of operating as a translator, preparing them for employment as an interpreter or translator after graduation.

IFR474 Version – Theme II

During this course, students work on a practical translation project, thus implementing the theoretical knowledge they have gained from other courses. Materials: Texts from Khmer and French authors.
