In Research on Japan I, students are divided into groups to research an aspect of Japanese culture or business environment, under a supervisor from the Department of Japanese. They then write a trial thesis, which prepares them for the final thesis which they complete during the second semester of this course.

All electives in the Department of Japanese are undertaken in Year IV, Semester II. Students enrolled in the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Japanese for Business) must undertake one elective to complete their degree. Students enrolled in the degree of Bachelor of Education (Japanese Language) must choose two electives.
Note: Not all these electives will be offered every year, instead they are offered on a rotating schedule.

This course focuses on the most common problems students face when learning Japanese grammar, and provides students with the knowledge and strategies they need to overcome these problems.

Students learn about the meanings of words, their relationships in a sentence, meanings of sentences, changes in meanings, and so on.
IJA427 Pragmatics

The study of how context can influence meaning and interpretation is crucial in a foreign language course. This course is devoted to teaching students how to bridge the gap that can appear between a sentence’s general meaning and the way it is used by a particular speaker. In this setting, context refers to any factor – linguistic or objective, that affects the actual interpretation of signs and expressions.

An expert researcher on the present-day Japanese economy is invited to lecture in this subject, allowing students direct access to specialised knowledge.
IJA436 Communication between Different Cultures

In this subject, students begin to think in detail about the problems of cross cultural communication. They are instructed in the many differences which can occur between cultures, including differences in culture, languages and social expressions, and are guided in thinking and discussion about possible solutions for such problems.
