MAJOR COURSES

The Bachelor of Arts (Korean Language) is being offered for the first time in 2007. Descriptions of Foundation Year-level elective courses can be found in the Department of Foundation Studies chapter of this handbook. Specific details for courses taught from Second Year on were unavailable at the time of printing. Please contact the Department of Korean Studiesfor further information.

 

Short Course in Korean Language

Level I
Lee Myung-Hee
This course provides students with an introduction to the Korean Language. Students focus on their comprehension of elementary Korean, their ability to understand simple spoken words and sentences, and to speak, read and write basic Korean. Students are also introduced to Korean grammar. Regular language exercises and quizzes serve to reinforce students’ learning.

Level II
Lim Young-Kyu
The Level II course builds on students’ comprehension of Korean, allowing them to develop a more effective and efficient knowledge of the language. Students continue to build their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and build an upper-beginner understanding of Korean grammar. They also undertake practical language-training exercises, including activities, language labs and field trips, and use audio-visual learning aids to increase their exposure to the Korean language in use.

Level III
Lee Myung-Hee
This course builds students’ abilities in Korean Language, focusing on practical communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Level III students actively participate in class discussions and activities, focusing on building their ability to maintain dialogue in Korean. Special modules help build students’ intellectual understanding of Korea, its history and culture, while simultaneously building students’ language skills.

Level IV
Hwang Hye-Ran
This course improves students’ communication skills in spoken and written Korean. Students practice their Korean language skills with language exercises and activities, working from a textbook as well as supplementary material including audio-visual material and language labs. A focus on improving students’ understanding and usage of Korean grammar is maintained throughout this final level of the short course in Korean language.
