B. Attendance Policy

Student attendance at class is required by the program. If a student is absent MORE than 4 times from class they automatically FAIL the course. These students are not eligible for the supplementary examination.

Definitions

Absences: absence from one class = 1 absence
Lateness to class = ½ of an absence
Lateness to class after a break = 1/2of an absence
Leaving class before it has finished = 1/2 of an absence

Please note: whilst not a requirement, it is considered a courtesy and demonstrates a professional attitude towards their own learning if a student can email their lecturer 24 hours before class to inform them of their intended absence. Such an email is only to inform the staff member concerned it is not seeking permission to be absent. Absence from class is the decision of the student.

C. Supplementary examination Policy

  1. If a student fails a course he/she will be considered eligible to be offered a supplementary examination under the following conditions:
    1. The student must have failed the course in the range of 40 – 49 marks.
    2. The student has met the course Attendance requirements – ie. no more than 4 recorded Absences.
  2. A supplementary examination will only be offered to eligible students (described above) and will be offered within 30 days of being informed by their lecturer.
  3. A student who fails a supplementary exam will be required to repeat the course.
  4. Only grades C and F are available in the results of a supplementary examination.
  5. The form, date and content of the supplementary examination are decided by the course lecturer in consultation with the program director.

D. Payment of Tuition Fee

The tuition fee for the entire program is US$ 2,100.00. This fee should be paid by US$ 350.00 installment at the beginning of each Term or by US$ 1,050.00 installment at the start of each academic year.

Usually the program collects the tuition fee from students and pay to the Account Office of the university. Then, the program will make budget plan for each term to request for the release of fund back from the Account Office. Failing to pay on time will cause problems in requesting the budget needed for each term, thus cause problems to the daily operation of the program. Therefore, students are required to adhere to the following policy:

For those who decide to pay the fee by each term, they are required to pay by the 3rd week of the new term. Any student who fails to pay by the 3rd week is required to discuss directly with the program to arrange for new paying-dates. That student will receive a late-payment letter from the director and is required to present the letter to the course lecturer in charge; otherwise he/she will not be allowed to take the course.

E. Suspension Policy

Students who wish to suspend from the program are required to notify their case to the program director at the beginning of each term. If they wish to suspend for only one term, they are required to make a written request to the program director. If they wish to suspend for one year, they are required to make a written request to the MoEYS. If the students fail to make the request on time, they are considered as “failing the course” or “dropping out” of the program.

F. Research Report / Thesis Policy

In Term 3, students will take Research Seminar 1 (RS1). During RS1, they will be working on the formulation of research proposal, with close guidance from their assigned supervisor. At the end of the Term, they will defense their proposal. If they fail the defense, they will have to repeat the RS1 with the next cohort. If they pass the defense, they will be classified into either Research Report or Thesis option, under the following condition:

  1. Research Report: For those who receive the total defense mark of less than 60%, and those who receive the total mark from 60% but their CGPA of the last two Terms is less than 3.00
  2. Thesis: For those who receive the total defense mark from 60% and their CGPA of the last two Terms from 3.00.
Note: The Research Report option students will take two courses more than the Thesis option students. When classified into the Thesis option, students can request to change their status to Research Report option students. If the Research Report option students want to upgrade their status to Thesis option, a letter of recommendation from their supervisor is needed.

G. Selection of Major

At the end of Term 2, students will be required to select one of the majors: EMP or EAL. However, if the number of students taking a particular major is less than 8, they are requested to compromise and join with the larger group of students who select the other major.
