The Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) founded in 1960, with the original name of Royal Khmer University. The period of 1975-1979 saw its closure and destruction during the Pol Pot regime as the decimation of teaching service and the cessation of whole education system. In 1980, it was re-established as the Ecole Normale Superieure (Higher Normal College) and merged with the Institute of Foreign Language (re-founded in 1981) in 1988 to create Phnom Penh University, and was re-named as Royal University of Phnom Penh in 1996. RUPP first offered its postgraduate program in 1998. So far it has 16 master’s programs. Master’s program of Social Work was launched in 2009 in collaboration with the Graduate School of Social Welfare at Ewha Womans University in South Korea. It aims to teach theories and practice skills of social work and educates students to be distinguished professional young leaders who can play important roles in various fields of social work and social welfare.
