Assessment

Modes of Instruction
The Master in Sociology-Anthropology majoring in Rural Development is taught in English and Khmer.

Throughout their course, students are assessed based on performance in workshops, fieldwork, essays, literature reviews, internship reports, and by a formal written exam at the end of each subject.

All assessments are designed to facilitate the testing of acquired competencies, and coordinators privilege tests that require critical thinking rather than mnemonic effort. Whenever possible, assessments are designed in the form of problems that students must solve

The final exams are in written form, with a strong emphasis on assessing students’ control of the concepts, techniques and arguments presented during the course.

Students assessment is within a Grading System based on a point scale of a maximum 100 marks, 50 being the minimum passing mark, and translated into a "letter grade", a "grade point" and a "value" as specified below:

Marks from 85% to 100% reward the outstanding achievements of students who have made a noteworthy effort during the course, showed
significant progress and produced remarkable results during assessment.

Marks between 80% and 84% are awarded to students who engage with class work critically and actively, have a very good control of the techniques, concepts and arguments developed in the course and have produced results of a high standard.

Marks from 70% to 79% are awarded to students who attend class actively, have a good control of the techniques, concepts and arguments developed in the course and produce good results which are above the average.

Marks from 65% to 69% are awarded to students who have made fairly good progress during the course, have shown effort in their studies and achieved an average control of covered concepts, techniques and arguments.

Marks from 50% to 64% are for students who have made satisfactory progress throughout the course and achieved satisfactory control of covered concepts, techniques and arguments.

Marks below 50% indicate a student has not made satisfactory progress throughout the course, failing to achieve satisfactory control of covered concepts, techniques and arguments. This is a fail mark.

Standardized grading rules are applied to all subjects. A "C" grade is the course passing mark and failed students will be allowed one re-examination for each subject, taken within one week of the original exam. If successful in the second exam, a student is eligible only for a minimum pass grade. Those who fail more than 2 subjects in any semester or fail in any re-examination will be thereafter disqualified from the Master program.

Plagiarism
Evidence of plagiarism and copying within assessments automatically attract a ‘fail’ grade.  Heavy or repeated offences lead to dismissal from the program.
