Coca-Cola Manufacturing Factory

On 28 October 2022, students of the honor program at the Faculty of Engineering, Royal University of Phnom Penh — Automation & Supply Chain Systems Engineering, Data Science & Engineering and Food Technology & Engineering — visited the Coca-Cola manufacturing factory in Phnom Penh to follow a soft drink from ingredient to sealed pack, and to see the automation and the supply chain planning that hold that line together.

About the host

A beverage plant on the edge of Phnom Penh

Coca-Cola has been bottled in Cambodia by Cambodia Beverage Company Ltd. (CBC), the licensed local bottler, which supplies the domestic market from a single plant on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. The site brings water treatment, syrup preparation, filling, packing and finished-goods storage onto one campus, and pairs the factory with a visitor centre that opens the operation to schools, universities and customers.

A drinks plant is an unusually clear teaching case. The product is simple and the recipe is fixed, so almost everything interesting is in the system around it — how fast the line runs, how tightly quality is held, how the packaging and the ingredients arrive on time, and how the finished pallets leave. That is the same territory the honour program covers in automation, in data and in food engineering, which is why the three departments travelled together.

What the visit set out to do

Experience the production process
To let students see how a drink is actually made — water treatment, syrup, carbonation, filling, sealing and packing — as one continuous process rather than as separate chapters in a textbook.

Get familiar with the drinks supply chain
To follow the chain on either side of the factory gate: ingredients, cans, preforms, closures and packaging coming in, and finished pallets going out to distributors across the country.

See automation in manufacturing
To watch automated filling, inspection and conveying at full production speed, and to understand what the operators on the floor are actually doing when the machines are running well.

Connect with industry
To put students in front of the people who run the plant, and to open the way to internships and, in time, to graduate positions in Cambodian manufacturing.

The briefing, the plant model and the line

Every visitor was issued a cap and a reflective vest before entering, and the group moved through the plant as one party under a guide. The tour opened in the visitor centre with the company’s history in Cambodia, then turned to a scale model of the whole site — the clearest single explanation of the day, because it lays out in one glance what the walk-through only shows in pieces: the goods-in yard, the treatment plant, the production hall under its solar roof, the warehouse and the loading bays.

Why this matters to an engineering student

The filling line sets the pace of everything else. A line runs at a fixed rate, and every other decision on the site is sized against it — how much syrup to prepare, how many cans and closures to hold, how many pallets the warehouse must clear each shift. Stop the line and the cost is not one machine; it is the whole chain either side of it.

Automation moves the work, it does not remove it. The machines fill, cap, inspect and palletise; the people set them up, change them over, watch the reject counts and fix them when they drift. What automation really changes is the skill the job asks for — which is precisely the argument for an engineer on the floor.

Quality has to be provable, not asserted. The certificates in reception are the visible end of a system of testing, traceability and audit that runs the length of the process. In food and drink, a claim you cannot document is a claim you cannot make.
