Curriculum

The approach chosen to build capacity

The applied program includes the establishment of a master program in Biotechnology and Food Technology with two profile “Research” and “Industrial”. Two cycles of training of master students are proposed. To ensure the quality of the program, all courses will be fully developed by Swedish partners. Local lecturers will accompany all courses with purpose to take over the teaching activities in the future. The aim of master program is to strengthen the educational system, to establish a research culture and to form a base for the establishment of a PhD program in the next phase. With current availability at MSc level, programs should follow the same course package for the first 2½ semesters, after which the best students – based on their overall score – will be offered a possibility to continue on the “Research Master”, while the remaining will be offered an “Industrial Master” track as

  • Industrial Master Track is designed for student who outstanding student who would like to conduct their research project under the supervision of BE faculty members.
  • Research Master Track is designed for outstanding students who continue directly their thesis work after 21/2 semester, where they will be offered projects and supervision by faculty member at RUPP.

The course package we intend to implement in the Bioengineering MSc program at RUPP, with the assistance of Umeå University (UmU), Lund University (LU) and the Swedish University of Agriculture (SLU). Tentative contents and learning aim of each course are expanded below the table. Course credits are provided in the UMAP Credit Transfer System (UCTS) system, where the conversion factor used is 5 ECTS = 3 UCTS.

In parallel with the first year, we intend to implement a mainly practical “Innovation Projects in Food and Biotechnology”, where the students are divided into groups and are given the task of coming up with an inventive product idea for the food market. This project will be supported with a stream of inspirational lectures on aspects such as entrepreneurship, group dynamics and project management (which they will also need in order to carry out the project properly in groups), and commercialization of biotechnological products. No separate credits will be offered for these inspirational lectures that are mediated by visiting teachers on different courses, but the students are expected to realize the usefulness of these for their future career. The research master students are in addition given a stream of lectures during their extended thesis work, focusing on science theory and ethics in research.
