Student Assessment Policy

Most of the major and elective courses are 3-credit. Student assessments are done via attendance, in-class participation, on-going assessment (quizzes, homework, assignments), midterm exam, final exam, oral presentation, etc. Assessments for each course do not necessarily have to be via all of the above methods and the weight (percentage) depends on each course. The following table lists assessment methods and percentage of the total score which is considered a standard scoring systems set as the student assessment policy for the Master of Science in Physics Program.

Assessment Methods Percentage
Attendance, in-class participation, quizzes, homework, assignments, oral presentation / and midterm exam 10%-50%
Oral presentation/ and final Exam 40%-70%

In each course, students must attend at least 90% of total hours for each course. Any student whose absence is over 10% of the total hours is not allowed to take the final exam.

Students who fail in any course must take one make-up exam before the start of next semester. Those who fail in the make-up exam must enroll in the same course within the next two academic years. Those who fail in more than two courses will not be awarded the Master’s degree.

Students are advised consult with the program coordinator and the supervisors before they start doing a thesis or a research report. The name of the supervisors will be assigned by the program before Semester 3. Before being allowed to write a thesis or a research report, students are required to write a proposal and each proposal (writing and oral presentation) is to be evaluated by a committee consisting of a group of experienced and qualified members in the field of Physics. The thesis or the research report of each student is to be assessed by a group of examiners. The members of the examiners must consist of at least two internal and one external experienced and qualified academics working in the field of Physics or relevant. Students are allowed to postpone their thesis or research report defense two times (one year for one time) if they cannot do the defense by the due date set in their cohort.

The postponing may be applied if and only if:

  • student cannot complete their coursework within two years,
  • student cannot complete their thesis or research report by the due date set in their cohort,
  • student has failed in their defense and is willing to redo it in the next cohort. In this case, the student must pay to the program to keep their studentship.
