Master of Arts in Linguistic

Master of Arts in Linguistic

BACKGROUND

The Master of Arts in Linguistics is offered by the Department of Linguistics at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP). Established in 2002 with the primary goal of advancing research in the Khmer language, the department has spearheaded key foundational projects. These include compiling a comprehensive Khmer grammar textbook and conducting extensive fieldwork to develop Cambodia's first linguistic atlas.

As the scientific study of human language, linguistics explores language rules, structures, and functions. The discipline provides a solid foundation for analyzing the core elements of speech and communication—including sounds, words, sentence structures, and meanings. It addresses compelling questions such as how children acquire language, how conversational dynamics function, why gender influences speech patterns, and how language varies across geographic regions and social groups. Ultimately, studying linguistics allows students to deeply investigate the nature of human communication and social interaction.

The Master of Arts in Linguistics at RUPP is a rigorous two-year graduate program designed to train students to specialize in the field, master advanced linguistic theories, and critically analyze language and discourse.

The curriculum offers comprehensive postgraduate training across a wide spectrum of subfields, including:

  • Core Linguistics: Phonology, syntax, lexicology, semantics, and pragmatics.
  • Applied & Socio-Linguistics: Sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, language acquisition, and an introduction to applied linguistics.
  • Interdisciplinary & Comparative Studies: Linguistic anthropology, historical and comparative linguistics, the philosophy of language, and the history of linguistics itself.
  • Specialized & Localized Focus: The unique structural characteristics of the Khmer language, language history, and the practical application of linguistics.
