The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) is the oldest and largest faculty of the Royal University of Phnom Penh. For more than six decades, FSSH has played a vital role in Cambodia's higher education through innovative teaching, research, and community engagement.

Dean

Prof. Leang UN, Ph.D.   Prof. Leang UN has extensive career in education and development, spanning Cambodia and internationally.   Education: He holds a PhD in Social and Behavioral Science from the University of Amsterdam (2012), a Master's in Philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University (2003), and a first degree in Philosophy from the Royal University of Phnom Penh (1999).   Career: His career includes teaching philosophy, working with various NGOs, holding academic leadership of graduate program in education at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), serving as a technical advisor for local and international organizations (Gender and Development for Cambodia, Action Aid Cambodia, UNESCO, UNFPA, World Bank), and working within the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS).  In 2016 he became Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at RUPP.   Research and Publications: His research focuses on education governance and finance, education policy and development discourse, and the social sciences and humanities. His work has been published in leading journals and books in the field.   International Collaboration: Prof. Leang UN has collaborated extensively with international institutions and organizations, giving presentations and holding research fellow or visiting scholar positions at universities and organizations around the world (Uganda, USA, Japan, Malaysia, China and Center for Khmer Studies).  He received a grant to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program in the USA. Recently, he is leading a regional project “Cultivating humanities and social sciences in Asia” in close cooperation with Association for Asian Studies under the support from Sida and various project dealing with Cambodian scholarship and translation project on social sciences and humanities (English to Khmer). Vice Dean

Mr. Thy Naroeun is an Assistant Professor and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. He has been working at the Regional Pedagogy Center of Phnom Penh since 1985 and at the Royal University of Phnom Penh since 1996 and is also recognized as a senior academic in the Department of Sociology, where he previously served as Head of Department. Mr. Thy Naroeun earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the Royal University of Phnom Penh in 1994, followed by a teaching diploma from the Faculty of Pedagogy in Phnom Penh in 1996. He later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Sociology at RUPP in 2001 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Rural Development and Tourism from the University of Trento, Italy, in 2002. He also received specialized training in Sociology and Anthropology at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines, Social Work Methods, Planning, Program Development, and Evaluation from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Curriculum Development and Research at Sogang University (SU), Republic of Korea, and Road Safety for Middle and Lower-Income Countries at the Technology University of Delft (TUD), Netherlands. He obtained his Master of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology from RUPP in 2006. Currently, he is also pursuing his studies for a PhD in the Khmer Studies Program at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP). With almost four decades of experience in higher education, Mr. Thy Naroeun has contributed significantly to the education of pedagogy, sociology, curriculum development, community research, and social development initiatives in Cambodia. His academic and professional interests include sociology, rural development, social welfare, social policy, juvenile delinquency, labor and migration, education, community development, and social research methodologies. He has been actively involved in research collaborations, capacity-building programs, and international academic partnerships with organizations and universities from Italy, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, the United States, and other countries. His contributions support the advancement of social sciences education and community-based research in Cambodia. Mr. Thy Naroeun has also participated in graduate teaching and supervision within the Bachelor and Master of Arts in Sociology, Social Work, and Development Studies program at RUPP, contributing to the development of future sociologists and researchers in Cambodia. In addition to teaching and administration, he contributes to academic publications and scholarly discussions related to topics: Socio-Economic Impact of Demining in Cambodia Communities, Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Perspective on Social Problems, Social Welfare Services, The Learning and Sharing of Rice Growing Knowledge Among Model Farmers, Social Welfare in East Asia and the Pacific, The Development of Social Welfare System Following the Asian Economic Crisis in the late 1990s, Social Work Education and Practice Development in the Asia-Pacific Region, International Cooperation for Improving the Quality of Life of the Aged and Disabled, The trafficking of Cambodian women and children Cros-Border, Rural-Urban Migration in Phnom Penh, Buddhists Belief and Cambodian Society, and Book Review: Rural Poverty, Growth, and Inequality in China by Yangyang Shen (2022). Vice Dean

Dr. Keo Chanvuthy received her PhD in Social Welfare from Ewha Womans University, South Korea in 2015. She specializes in a counselor for orphans, children with disabilities, women trafficking victims, domestic violence victims, and people with HIV/AIDS. She is recently a vice dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Royal University of Phnom Penh and teaches in Master Program in Social Work at Royal University of Phnom Penh since 2010. She has also involved with many research activities and community services to address the needs of vulnerable people in rural Cambodia so their voice can be heard.
