Department of Tourism

Introduction

Cambodia's attractiveness as a tourist destination has grown tremendously. The trend continues into the future. More new managerial and administrative jobs in tourism marketing, development, planning, visitor services, hospitality, and transport have been generated. In response to the needs for capable human resources in the tourism industry, RUPP has established the Department of Tourism (DoT), offering the Bachelor of Arts in Tourism Management.

Students studying for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Tourism Management fulfill the requirements for the degree over four years. During their studies, they undertake both practical and theoretical tourism skills training. The degree focuses on the issues of environmental, economic and cultural sustainability, and hones student s industrial, analytical and research skills. This knowledge prepares graduates for careers in government ministries, hotels, travel agencies, development and educational institutions, tour operations, airlines and the non-government organization sector (NGOs).

Background

The DoT was established in 2001 following the success of the one-off Masters Program in Tourism Management, which was developed in partnership with the University of Technology, Sydney and the University of Bologna, Italy. The DoT offers a Bachelor of Arts in Tourism Management which is an integrated, interdisciplinary degree committed to high standards and quality in tourism teaching and research. Students graduate with a polished understanding of business management, environmental planning, economics, psychology, cultural studies, geography, marketing and management, as well as specific tourism sectors, such as airlines and transportation, tour operations hospitality and attractions management.

Admission

Admission to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Tourism Management is very competitive. For scholarship students, the admissions process is administered by the Department of Higher Education Sector of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, based on results in the High School Certificate subjects of Geography and Mathematics. For fee-paying students, they are required to take the entrance examination in English.

Assessment

For each subject, students are assessed through tests (30%), homework, presentations and assignments (20%), participation and attendance (10%), and a final examination (40%). At the end of the fourth year, students are required to write and present an original thesis or undertake a tourism industry practicum/internship, write a report and present their findings.
